What is a competitor mention?
It's any Reddit post or comment where someone names a rival product. dist0 reads the subreddits you watch and pulls out the line where a competing product comes up — who said it, in which community, and a link back to the thread.
Competitor mentions give you context on your competition — which rivals come up in the conversations dist0 watches, how often, and where.
When does dist0 count something as a competitor?
Not every product name counts. dist0 keeps a mention when the named product looks like a real rival — one that does the same job for the same kind of customer as you — and it leans toward including a product when it's a close call. Ones that are clearly unrelated are dropped.
dist0 knows your main rivals from your website, which it reads into your project memory. It watches for those by name, and it also picks up close rivals it wasn't told about when they come up in the right conversations. To add, remove, or correct a competitor, edit your project memory — see Keep your project memory accurate.
One entry per product
However you read them, competitor mentions are grouped by product. Every mention of the same product lands in one entry — a rival named in 12 different posts shows up as a single entry, not 12 separate ones — even when people capitalize it differently. The first time a product comes up, its name becomes the label for that entry. Entries are ranked most-mentioned first.
Each entry keeps its source posts, so you can always open a product and read the exact lines behind the count.
What the numbers mean
Every entry carries a count and a date:
- Mentions (or posts) — how many Reddit posts named the product. If one post names the same product twice, it still counts as one post. If a single post names two different rivals, each of them gets credit for that post.
- Last updated — when the product most recently came up.
Where can I read my competitor mentions?
They show up in several places. Pick whichever fits how you work.
- Your daily brief. Each brief groups that day's competitor mentions by product and sends them to your email and Slack. See How your daily brief works.
- The Competitors page. In the dashboard sidebar, under Competitors. It's the running total — every product that's come up so far, one row each, with its post count and when it was last updated. Sort by Recent or Most posts, and open any row to read every mention and jump to the original Reddit thread.
- In Claude or ChatGPT. Connect dist0 to your AI chat and ask about your competitors in plain language. See Read your signals in Claude or ChatGPT.
- Sent to your own tools. On the Pro plan, dist0 can post each new competitor mention to a web address you control as soon as it's found, so it lands in your own system. Turn it on in Settings → Developer → Webhook and tick Competitor mentions — see Webhooks.
- Over the API. Pull your competitor mentions straight into your own script or AI agent. See the API reference.
Why am I seeing a product that isn't really a competitor?
dist0 leans toward showing you more, so now and then it'll pick up a product that isn't a true rival — something adjacent that gets named in the same conversations. When that keeps happening, you can tell dist0 to stop.
Message the dist0 Slack bot in plain words, naming what isn't a fit:
Stop treating Notion as a competitor — we don't compete with them.
This is a filtering rule: a standing instruction for what to leave out. From then on, mentions of that product are skipped before they reach any of the places above. The filtering-rules guide covers how to write one well.
FAQ
Why is a rival I care about not showing up?
dist0 only picks up a competitor when someone actually names it on Reddit, in a subreddit you watch, while competitor mentions are turned on. If a rival hasn't come up yet, or you added it to memory after the fact, give it time — it appears the next time someone mentions it.
One post named two rivals. How is it counted?
Each product gets credit. That single post shows up under both products, and counts as one post for each of them.
Can I stop a product from showing up?
Yes. Tell the Slack bot it isn't a real competitor, and dist0 skips it from then on. It's the same filtering rule you'd use to leave out any mention that isn't a fit.
